What are Blue Star and Gold Star families?
A blue star family has a member in active military service. A gold star family has lost a family member in military service. The use of blue and gold stars originated during World War I. It became a custom for military families to put a flag or banner near their front window. The banner has a white field, a red border and a blue star for every member of the family serving in the military. A gold star represents a family member who has died in military service. The last Sunday in September is designated as Gold Star Mothers Day. In recent years military families begin using silver stars. A silver stars designates a person wounded or injured in a war zone.
