Food Insurance

Do you have car insurance?  Do you have home insurance or heath insurance?   How about food insurance?  So what is food insurance and how much do people need?

Food insurance is having a ready supply of food in case of an emergency.  FEMA recommends all Americans to have at least a two week supply of non-perishable food.   In an emergency or disaster situation in which there in no electricity, FEMA recommends using perishable food from the refrigerator first.  After using the supply of food from the refrigerator, FEMA recommends using food from the freezer before using non-perishable items such as can food.

Since people are able to survive much longer without food than without water, having the ability to have a clean and reliable source of water is vital.  FEMA recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person for two weeks.  A family of four would require fifty-six gallons of water to have a two-week supply for their whole family.  Unfortunately, storing water takes up a lot of space that most people do not have.   If a family cannot store a two-week supply, FEMA recommends storing as much water as possible.   It would be advantageous for many people to have at least a three-day supply of water for each member of the household and a water purification system.  The Berkey water filter is considered by many to be the best filtration systems available for the general public.  The Berkey water filter cost around two hundred and fifty dollars.   That is a little steep for most people’s emergency supply cache but a LifeStraw can be bought for less than twenty dollars and it can filter up to 1,000 liters of water.

Having a two-week supply of food and water in case of an emergency is a good start towards having food insurance but it is only a start.  We live in a very dangerous world in which many events such as an EMP attack, an economic collapse, or a pandemic are distinct possibilities.  It would be wise for all Americans to have at least a six month supply of non perishable food to guard against natural or man-made disasters.

When developing a stockpile of food, there a couple of things that everyone should remember.  One, storing food should not wreck your budget.  Set aside a small amount of money each week to buy supplies.  Ten dollars a week can go a long ways toward developing a supply of food that your family can depend upon.  When you are buying groceries, you should stock up on items that you use that are on sale.  Two, do not buy items that your family does not eat.  Food supplies need to be rotated and used in your daily life.  There is no need in buying food that your family does not eat.   It is wasteful and not budget friendly to buy food and never use it.  A good prepper will build a pantry of food that will use.  Do not store food that is not going to be used but when developing a stock pile of food; it is wise to have a large variety of food.  No one wants to have to eat the same food every day.  It can lead to food boredom and more importantly it can cause many health issues.

There are many resources on the internet and books that deal with developing a food supply.   In today’s world it would be wise to develop a supply of food so that you are not reliant upon the government or anyone else in the case of an emergency.
